Making a Chess set in Maya
To start this project you must have: Pictures of all the chess pieces, a dark wood texture, and a light wood texture.
Ok...
The Board
Make a poly-cube with these properties.
Width=10.000
Height=.8000
Depth=10.000
Subdivisions Along Width=10
Subdivisions Along Height=1
Subdivisions Along Depth=10
Axis=Y
Now select all the outside row of faces and smooth them.

Now you are done with the board until the texturing starts.
Pieces
Make a poly-Cylinder
Radius=.4000
Height=.1000
Subdivisions Around Axis=20
All else=1
Now Extrude the top face and mold it to the picture of the pawn you have.
Now do the same for all the pieces.

Texturing
Select the Board and give it the texture of the dark wood.
Select every other square in the middle (the 8 unsmoothed faces) and give it the texture of the light wood
Duplicate the pawns for all the rows and make copies of all the other ones and put them in the places.
